We are pleased to announce the selection of two new Fellows for the Experimental Fellowship at Bauhaus Earth. We welcome two projects exploring the same material: earth. The Ukrainian team of Anna Pomazanna and Mykhailo Chevchenko will begin the first phase of their project “Grunt” in the coming weeks. The second project, “Earth, Lightly” by Maria Lisogorskaya and Kaye Song from Assemble, London, will start in the new year.

"Grunt" by Anna Pomazanna and Mykhailo Shevchenko

The first project, "Grunt", will explore the potential of building and rebuilding with earth from contaminated soil in conflict zones, with a particular focus on Ukraine. The aim is to counteract war-related environmental pollution and explore how it can be integrated into reconstruction efforts. The initiation of multidisciplinary cooperation networks and the development of guidelines that can be applied in other conflict zones around the world are crucial outcomes of the project.

"Earth, Lightly" by Maria Lisogorskaya and Kaye Song

In their Fellowship project "Earth, Lightly", architects and artists Maria Lisogorskaya and Kaye Song call for a new approach to the aesthetics of regenerative architecture. The project will test and develop prototypes for earth-based construction using techniques that explore both the aesthetic and haptic possibilities of art and architecture. They are interested in materials such as clay and lime plasters, mineral and local pigments and bioregional materials, as well as issues such as reuse, performative building, and the sensory qualities of ecological architecture.

Sharing a fascination with clays and soils, yet focusing on complementary aspects of the material, we are intrigued by the prospect of the new Fellows working together at Bauhaus Earth in Berlin to create a holistic understanding of the benefits and practices of earthen architecture, bridging science, industry and the humanities. Bringing together practitioners, experts, architects and artists from across Europe, their projects will prototype and demonstrate both the beauty and critical contemporary relevance of earth-based architecture.

The Experimental Fellowship at Bauhaus Earth

Since 2022, our Fellowship – a partnership between Bauhaus Earth and Experimental – has provided a platform for emerging researchers, artists, experimenters, and practitioners to explore their ideas for advancing regenerative building materials and practices. Outcomes of the Fellowship include scientific reports, exhibition pieces, and knowledge-sharing formats. Both of the newest Fellowship projects will build on an in-depth exploration of earth as a building material. They focus on complementary aspects of the material and offer synergies for working together as part of the Fellowship. They will begin their projects as we complete significant milestones with current Fellowship projects concrete.matters with Baukreisel and CONQ with Angie Dub and Heidi Jalkh.

This past summer, the third open call for Fellowship project proposals received a total of 120 submissions from around the world. The next round of the open call is expected in summer 2025. Experimental will soon be launching further Fellowships with additional partners. The Bauhaus Earth Fellowship (or BE-FELLOW) has been renamed the Experimental Fellowship at Bauhaus Earth.
