Bauhaus Earth, together with the Technical University of Berlin and the University of Sustainable Development in Eberswalde, is pleased to form the Berlin-Brandenburg hub of the New European Bauhaus Academy!
The New European Bauhaus Academy, a flagship project of the European Commission, was announced at this year’s New European Bauhaus Festival in April. It will offer training opportunities for construction professionals in regenerative building methods and materials. The network of New European Bauhaus Academy Hubs represents a major step for the development of the Academy. The hubs will provide training, resources, and awareness on the topic of bio-based and circular building.
Regional hubs and commitments
The NEBA Hubs will connect regional competencies and facilitate access to training and learning formats on sustainable, circular, and bio-based materials. Overall, the mission of each hub is to train, upskill, and re-skill the construction ecosystem to achieve carbon neutrality and a beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive transformation of the built environment.
“The regional hubs of the New European Bauhaus Academy will develop place- and context-specific, creative, science- and practice-based learning formats to reach those who urgently need a better understanding of sustainable, nature-based construction and the opportunities and challenges in the socio-ecological transformation of the built environment.” – Prof. Philipp Misselwitz, CEO of Bauhaus Earth
At an event in Tallinn, Estonia, last week, the first hubs were officially launched. A group of 14 organizations from 11 countries signed memorandums to begin their work in four regional hubs. Bauhaus Earth, together with the Technical University of Berlin (TUB) and the University for Sustainable Development in Eberswalde (HNEE), will form the NEBA Berlin-Brandenburg Hub. They will be joined by the NEBA Pioneer Hub (University of Primorska, Holzbau Austria, and Lodz University of Technology), the NEBA North Hub (Research Institutes of Sweden, Aalto University, and Estonian Academy of Arts), and the NEBA South Hub (Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, CESEFOR Foundation, and Liguria Region).
Each of the regional hubs will provide training to key stakeholders in the construction ecosystem. In doing so, they will focus on the relevant local context. Close collaboration will ensure that professionals across Europe have access to high-quality training, both in person and online. Training will be offered in many formats and at different levels, from awareness raising to recognized certifications and micro-credentials.
A NEBA Outreach Hub (InnovaWood, European Association for Architectural Education, and BOKU University) will support the activities of the NEBA Regional Hubs through outreach and communication. This hub will bring the activities of the whole network to European policymakers and stakeholders.
Moving forward
The next step for the consortium is to define the operating models of each of the NEBA Hubs. Together, we will formally establish the NEB Academy umbrella organization. The NEB Academy will be open to other actors in Europe. An open call to join the NEB Academy will be published in February 2025. The NEBA Alliance project is supported by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking and its members under Horizon Europe grant no. 101160532 from 2024 to 2026.
